Counselling believers in perilous times
News events and comment.
Some exciting prophetic events to keep an eye on which will soon occur:
●A war in which the capital city of Syria, Damascus will "lie a ruinous heap" (Isaiah17) This war will involve Israel.
●The aligning of the nations for the great war of Gog and Magog (Ezekiel 38&39) This is on the go now.
●Israel to be drawn into the wider Middle East situation. This will most probably result in the above mentioned war.
●A new world credit crisis and economic meltdown, which will pave the way for a new system of financial control. This will be fully realised in the tribulation, but we will see the start of it soon.
●The nations of Europe to either break up, or to reform into a new strong but smaller Europe which will have 10 divisions.
Counselling believers in perilous times:
2 Timothy 3:1-2 "But know this, that in the last days perilous times will come: For men will be lovers of themselves..."
This edition is centred around how to counsel and help believers as they face the growing onslaught of "perilous times" in this day.
Prophetically, we are in the forerunner period of the coming of our Lord as well as the antichrist with his false prophet. The war in the spirit realm is intensifying now. It results in many believers without a strong foundation being shipwrecked in their faith and personal lives.
This edition is centred specifically around the most common, widespread problem which is stress, despair and depression.
Right up front let me lay out some principles. This edition relates to counselling believers and NOT unbelievers. This edition flies in the face of, and is the exact opposite of modern secular counselling and psychology. These principles, if applied are guaranteed to work with enduring results. They will also have eternal results and consequences, in terms of the believers reward.
On a personal level, more and more of my friends are becoming stressed out and plagued with depression and other besetting issues. Much of this edition is firsthand accounts of my own experiences in dealing with people. I must also add, with humility, that depression or stress are unknown to me personally.
Why believers must never go outside of God's word for counsel:
We are spirit, soul and body. The Bible uses different original words for each. 'Psyche' is the word for soul. 'Bios' is the word for body and 'Zoe' is the word for spirit life. The soul is a window and access point to our spirit. The world does not recognise the spirit. It sees only the body and soul realms. Yes the world talks about spirit, but it does not mean what we mean.
Hebrews 4:12 "For the word of God is living and powerful and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit and of joints and marrow (body) and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart."
The above verse identifies the three areas. If the unsaved world does not recognise this division and rejects the "living and powerful word of God" how can they make the right diagnosis of problems and give the right counsel?
Jeremiah 17:5-8 "Cursed is the man who trusts in man and makes flesh his strength, whose heart departs from the Lord. He shall be a like a shrub in the desert, and shall not see good when it comes...Blessed is the man who trusts in the Lord and whose hope is in the Lord, for he shall be like a tree planted by the waters."
The above verse speaks clearly against putting your trust in unregenerate man. What a powerful far reaching and meaningful verse that is! Going the way of unregenerate man leaves you like a frazzled desert plant, while going God's way leaves you in abundance.
The book of James speaks of the "wisdom that is from below" and the "wisdom that is from above". How can an unsaved person with no experiential knowledge of and love of our Lord have the wisdom that is from above?
The Godly counsellor absolutely needs the "wisdom from above" in all his counselling.
Psalm1:1 "Blessed is the man who walks not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor stands in the path of sinners, nor sits in the seat of the scornful"
Notice that in the verse above there is a direction involved. It is 'walk' - 'stand' - 'sit'. When you are under the counsel of the ungodly your life grinds to a halt and your problems are in fact just beginning.
Ephesians 4:17 "You should not walk as the rest of the Gentiles walk in the futility of their mind (soul), having their understanding darkened, being alienated from the life of God, because of the ignorance that is in them, because of the hardening of their hearts."
The above verse is not a suggestion, it's actually a command from God Himself. This relates to believers going wrong, but also to unsaved counsellors or psychologists. How can you as a believer go to someone whose heart is darkened by God for help?
John 14:16-17 "...The Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive..."
If the world of the unsaved cannot receive or even see truth, how can you go to them for help?
2 Corinthians 3:5-6 "...Our sufficiency is from God, who made us sufficient ministers of the new covenant , not of the letter, but of the Spirit; for the letter kills; but the Spirit gives life."
It is only the Spirit of the living God that can bring life to the word of God. Outside of the Spirit, the word is dead letter, no different to that of Shakespeare! The original words 'logos' and 'rhema' are good examples. Logos means 'word' and applies to any word, but 'rhema' means revelation word, or the word made alive by God. The word 'gnosis' is similar. It means knowledge or just plain head-knowledge, while 'epignosis' means knowledge from above, or Godly awakened knowledge.
The ungodly counsellor can never operate in the realm of revelation knowledge. He can't see or know the difference. it's only the enlightening power of the Spirit of God that brings the word to life and gives true spiritual sight.
The ungodly counsellor is bound in the world of dead letter and head knowledge.
If you go to the unsaved for counsel, you are placing your spirit in grave danger. You are on a slippery slope downwards. You will be in a growing spiritual conflict that you won't even see until it's too late. Your situation will end up worse than when you started.
Spirit inspired, enlivened and motivated truth is what is needed to counsel the saved.
Truth is not correct doctrine. Its correct doctrine enlightened by the Holy Spirit. Only the Holy Spirit can give sight.
The medicine bottle:
All of the verses in this edition are very important. They are the medicine bottle for the soul of the believer under the weight of stress depression and anxiety.
If you go to unsaved counsellors or psychologists, you will be given pills. These pills (all of them) are designed to make you feel better. But they make you passive. This is a great danger. You have no chance dealing with the devil in a spaced out passive mode.
The word 'pharmakia' is the original Bible word for sorcery. It's also the word from which 'pharmacy' or drugs is derived.
Drugs or pills can never ever fix the problems of the soul or mind. They will in fact open you up to greater problems.
The Bible is the only medicine bottle you need!
Proverbs 14:25 "A true witness delivers souls, but a deceitful witness speaks lies and endangers lives (amp)
Warning: Believers who go to unsaved psychologists and secular counsellors for help are disqualified from ministry!
Psalm 37:30-31 (LB) "The godly man is a good counsellor because he is just and fair and knows right from wrong."
Counselling methods and principles:
Mark 16:17 "These signs will follow them that believe, in My name they will cast out demons; they will speak with new tongues."
Many counselling problems have demonic roots. Some believers get themselves into a terrible demonic mess. You will be ineffective in helping them and casting out demons without the supernatural power and insight, which comes through the baptism in the Spirit.
2 Corinthians 10:4 "For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty in God for the pulling down of strongholds."
2 Timothy 3:16 "All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work."
Psalm 119:130 "The entrance of Your words gives light..."
Colossians 1:28 "Him we preach warning every man and teaching every man in all wisdom, that we may present every man perfect in Christ Jesus."
Proverbs 14:26-27 "In the fear of the Lord there is strong confidence...the Fear of the Lord is a fountain of life
Luke 4:18 "The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me...HE has sent Me to heal the broken-hearted and to preach deliverance to the captives, recovery of sight to the blind and to set at liberty those who are oppressed." (Applied to the Godly counsellor.)
2 Corinthians 7:10 " Godly sorrow produces repentance...but the sorrow of the world produces death."
Proverbs 3:32 "His secret counsel is with the upright."
2 Peter 1:3-4 "His divine power has given to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of Him, who called us by glory and virtue, by which have been given to us exceedingly great and precious promises that through these, you may be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust."
Here are the underlined words from the verses above. These are some of the primary tools and principles needed for setting people free:
●New tongues, ●The Spirit of God, ●Divine power, ●Mighty weapons (spiritual) ●All scripture, ●Revelation light, ●Warning, ●Repentance, ●The fear of the Lord, ●Being upright or holy
It's worth bearing in mind that only the Kingdom of God is unshakeable, so this is where we need to strive to go and be.
Causes of depression and stress:
There are obviously many, but some of the big-ticket causes are these:
Proverbs 12:25 "Anxiety in the heart of man causes depression, but a good word makes it glad."
Today many are part of the 'me-now' generation. Not being able to get my will now is stressful. Self will, self exaltation and self orientation is stressful and causes anxiety.
Psalm 107:17 "Fools because of their transgression and because of their iniquities were afflicted."
The above verse reveals that sin or incorrect living causes affliction. This is manifest primarily in soul realm.
A low view of God and His Kingdom is a cause of many lesser evils and problems. In fact many people have an imaginary Christ and therefore an imaginary salvation. Their God is small and their problems are big.
Materialism and worldliness, puts out the light of the soul and turns people into a generation of satanically controlled zombies. Of course we all need various material things. I'm not talking about that, but the excessive desire for material possessions.
2 Corinthians 10:12 "For we dare not class ourselves or compare ourselves with those who commend themselves. But they measuring themselves by themselves and comparing themselves among themselves are not wise."
Many people are plagued with rejection or fear of rejection. In some cases this is valid but in most cases it's rooted in self. If we are "dead to self" as the Bible says, then we will be quite content in the knowledge of our acceptance by Yeshua / Jesus.
Philippians 4:11 "Not that I speak in regard to need, for I have learned that in whatever state I am to be content."
Some people are the subjects of inherited generational curses or problems that come down from their family. In most cases it's not their fault. Whatever the cause, our Lord can set them totally free through proper counsel and spiritual warfare.
Some people come under curses from all sorts of activties that are spiritually charged today
Proverbs 26:2 "The curse, without a cause will not alight."
It's important to recognise that Satan get's access to the believer through the world, the flesh (soul) and demonic.
False or erroneous doctrine always leads to wrong thinking and wrong actions and ultimately to many problems including stress.
Many people that belong to various denominations are also sectarian in their thinking. Their divided church has taught them that they are right and everyone else is wrong. They have been made clones of the denomination (division) Division always causes stress.
Breaking the chains of mental imprisonment.
This is huge cause of a great many problems.
Proverbs 23:7 "As a man thinks in his heart so is he..."
This verse seems obvious, but its very deep! If your chain of thought of thought process goes along unrestrained in one direction or another it leads to a bit more than a chain of thought. It leads to a chain of bondage. This is the breeding ground of obsession, habits, addictions and all sorts of wrong lifestyle issues.
Many people say that they can't change their thought patterns. Wrong...you can change your thinking.
Philippians 4:8-9 "Finally brethren, whatever things are true, noble, just pure, lovely of good report and if there is any virtue and anything praiseworthy - meditate (think) on these things. The things which learned and heard and received and saw in me, these do and the God of peace will be with you."
Now the Bible would not say "think on these things" if you can not control your thinking.
Thinking is a choice. You can consciously choose to think in a certain way. You can consciously choose to cast down a certain thought chain.
There are some people who will not be able to change their thinking. This is because they have gone so deeply in the wrong direction that they are demon possessed. That's quite right, you can think yourself into a bondage, producing wrong actions and demon involvement.
2 Corinthians 10:5 "Casting down arguments and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, bringing every thought into captivity into the obedience of Christ."
This verse speaks of thoughts being a "high thing" These are demonic strongholds. The verse gives the answer. "Cast down" the "high thing" and bring it into he captivity of Christ.
This is a spiritual warfare issue in which you need the gifts of the Spirit. Once you get into the world of demon possession and oppression, you can't do it on your own. Outside of the baptism of the Spirit you are powerless.
Proverbs 3:5-6 "Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge Him and He shall direct your paths."
The above verse is very beautiful. It's not easy to do, but it is the answer. Over time, with our Lord's help and leading you will be able to become one of these glorious oddballs.
Proverbs 8:17 "I love those that love Me and those who seek Me diligently will find Me."
Today we're in a world of instant pop-up, fast digital results. God does not work that way. He works with diligence and time in our character and personality. We need to spend much dedicated time separated diligently to Him.
Proverbs 8:35 "For whoever finds Me finds life and obtains favour with the Lord."
James 4:7 "Submit to God, resist the devil and he will flee from you. Draw near to God and He will draw near to you..."
There's a two-fold aspect to the verse above. Submission and resisting. these are opposites, but correctly applied this is the answer and way to victory. The problem is that too many resist God and submit to the devil and his ways!
Philippians 4:6 "Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God."
It's easy to spot a person at liberty and with the grace of God on their lives. They are not anxious, stressed people and they are thankful people. People full of anxiety and stress are not thankful people. They're wrapped up in self. They focus continually on 'me-now'. You see, thankfulness is outward pointing. It's directed away from me-now to someone else or others.
Thankful people are nice to be around. In fact the word for thanks in many languages is the same as grace. In Italian, the word for thanks is 'grazie'. Thankful people have grace upon them.
Thankful people are generally also humble people. "God gives grace to the humble" says the Bible. Self orientated people are proud people. "God resists the proud" says the Bible.
Isaiah 61:3 ..."Put on the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness." Praise is similar to thanksgiving...it is outward looking. Note also that this verse calls "heaviness" or depression a spirit!!. In many cases especially when depression is besetting its a spiritual force and can only be dealt with by those who are equipped with spiritual weapons.
The power of Bible prophecy:
1 John 3:3 "Everyone who has this hope in Him purifies himself."
The hope being referred to in the above verse is the hope of His coming. Note that having an active hope in the coming of our Lord leads to holiness and purity. One of the universal problems with people under the bondage of depression is that can only see me now. They can't see into the future. Hope is a future related thing
2 Timothy 4:8 "Finally there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord the righteous Judge, will give to me on that Day, and not to me only but to those who all who have loved His appearing."
In the above verse we have great hope. But this hope and reward is limited to those who "love His appearing" This is a very powerful verse. Knowing that there is an eternal reward laid up for us is strongly motivational. Its encouraging and in many ways lifts us up into the world that lies ahead.
Promise and hope gives us great visions of coming glory. These are things that are a lot more than petty promises. These are real and coming soon!! What encouragement, what satisfaction! We can rest in the knowledge of these things.
The power of the cross in counselling:
1 Corinthians 1:18-19 "For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God. For it is written I will destroy the wisdom of the wise, and bring to nothing the understanding of the prudent."
The cross is an instrument of death. This is the way to life...the life of God. Death on a cross led our Lord and saviour to resurrection. In terms of us taking up our cross daily, its much the same thing. The cross kills all that is not of God in our lives and delivers us to victory. Paul says, "I must decrease and He must increase." Our Lord has no problems, so if He is increasing in us...we are on the road to freedom.
1 Peter 5:6-7 "Therefore humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God, that He may exalt you in due time, casting all your cares upon Him."
Humility is similar to cross bearing, it allows our great Lord to lift us up.
Proverbs 14:12 "There is a way which seems right to a man, but its end is the way of death."
The way of the cross is not the way that seems right to man. It's the exact opposite of the world's ways of doing things!! The world's way is all about self exaltation and 'me now'.
Matthew 16:24-25 "If anyone desires to come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow Me, for whoever desires to save his life will lose it and whoever loses his life for My sake will find it."
The above verse is one of the very powerful holy contradictions. The way to find real victorious life is deny self and get self to die on the cross. This is way to victory in terms of all the mind and soul problems like depression.
There are some believers that you will not be able to help:
Hebrews 4:2 "The gospel was preached to us as well as to them, but the word which they heard did not profit them, not being mixed with faith..."
Proverbs 1:25-27 "Because you disdained my counsel and would have none of my reproof, I also will laugh at your calamity; I will mock when your terror comes like a storm and your destruction comes like a whirlwind, when distress and anguish come upon you."
There are some believers who are so worldly and self-orientated that you can't help them at all. Your words and counsel falls on deaf ears. Many of these people are counterfeit Christians or spiritual frauds sent by the devil to sidetrack you and waste your time.
The keys to success and Godly rewards
Proverbs 4:18-23 The path of the just is like the shining sun, that shines ever brighter unto the perfect day. The way of the wicked is like darkness; they do not know what makes them stumble. My son give attention to My words; incline your ear to My sayings. Do not let them depart from your eyes; Keep them in the midst of your heart; for they are life to those that find them and health to all their flesh. Keep your heart with all diligence, for out it springs the issues of life."
The above verse speaks of a path or a life journey. If you are on the right path with our Lord lighting and leading the way, you will be moving forward in growing glory and victory!
Don't underestimate this verse above. It is very powerful. As believers we need to be moving ever forward with our Lord, breaking through satanic barriers and hindrances.
John 16:33 "These things I have spoken to you that in Me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation; but be of good cheer for I have overcome the world."
The verse above and the verse below reveals this very powerful measure that Our Lord has given us. If you are following our great Messiah correctly, and His word is not dead-letter to you...you will be in peace. Inner peace is the green light.
This is true liberation and wonderful victory. The more we live and move "in Him" the more we will be in peace.
Psalm 119:165 "Great peace have they love your law (word) and nothing causes them to stumble"
The number of people with problems of the mind are increasing at a dramatic rate. Very few get truly set free. The answer is in the Biblical principles. Not dead doctrine, but Spirit inspired led and applied truth. The answer does not lie outside of God's kingdom.
The answer is right before our eyes, yet few choose it. That's a tragic fruit of the modern world.
Bible prophecy reveals that these things will intensify with great numbers falling victim.
My prayer and hope for you, is that you will not be a victim but a victor. If you are a victim, I pray that you pray about all these things and apply them into your life. They will work in time and you will then be in a place where you'll be able to help others.
Proverbs 4:20-22 "My son give attention to my words, incline your ears to my sayings. Do not let them depart from your eyes; keep them in the midst of your heart; For they are life to those who find them and health to all their flesh. Keep your heart with all diligence for out of it spring the issues of life."
Psalm 1:1-3 "Blessed is the man who walks not in the counsel of the ungodly...but his delight is in the law of the Lord, and in His law he meditates day and night. He shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that bring forth its fruit in it's season, whose leaf shall not wither; and whatever he does shall prosper."
Psalm 139:1 "O Lord, You have searched me and known me."
This is one of my own mixed media paintings. It represents many things. It has symbols of hope, olive leaves, menorahs representing God's light, a shofar blower representing warning. It has the museum where the Dead Sea Scrolls are displayed, called the Shrine of the Book. It has scrolls and Hebrew letters symbolising promise. It has the colours of warmth as well as bits of pure gold leaf representing value.
Kind regards and many blessings...Shalom and grow in grace!
